Introduction:

This information is provided by Blueprint, a drug education research programme involving your child's school.

You'll find help and information about all types of drugs, including legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, medicines from the chemist or doctor, as well as a range of illegal drugs.

We live in a drug-using society many adults smoke, most drink alcohol, and almost all will use medicines sometimes.

Illegal drugs, which are probably the drugs that worry parents the most, regularly feature on TV, in the movies, in the papers, and in music. This makes it easy to lose sight of the fact that only a small proportion of schoolage children use illegal drugs.

You can help your children to think carefully about all types of drug use by reading the information and advice in this booklet - and trying to find ways of talking to them about drugs.

We hope that you find this information useful to you and your family

What are drugs?
The definition of a drug given by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is:
A substance people take to change the way they feel, think or behave.
For the purposes of Blueprint this includes medicines, volatile substances (such as glue and areosols), alcohol, tobacco, caffine and illegal drugs.
